Week 4 - Lecture 8

In class critique -

I had a large critique on my brochure as to what I want it to look like and the design around it. This critique I made up the brochure with all the spreads and Fay wrote over the spreads with feedback and things to change. The critiques are below -

Week 4 - Lecture 7 - Homework

Developments post critique -

Further developments onwards from critique. I feel the critiques in the previous class were very constructive and from here I have gone on to create all my inside spreads much further. I have done a lot of research into the map spread and researched many artist models. Some strong map designs -
Also I developed some pictogram research and a mockup - initial pictogram for my collages -

From here my developments are much stronger, but I am still feeling unsure about the title font - although having all titles the same font is much stronger, so this is something I can continue. Developments are attached - from here I am taking these back to class for further critique and advice.

All I need to create from here is my final cover spread, and work on developing these spreads towards a final.

Week 4 - Lecture 7

Interim Critiques -

I was feeling a little stuck before this class but after presenting my work to Fay and Caroline I now have a stronger direction in where to head. The image below shows the critiques that were made and my strongest pieces that were selected for further developments.

From here I plan to go on and develop my designs further drawing on these critiques.

Week 3 - Lecture 6 - Homework

Spread creation and development -

This week I set a mission that by Monday to have my entire 3 spreads mocked up for Mondays critique with my Recreation and Sport page as well. I have developed these throughly in my workbook and created these spreads to take into the critique -

I am happy with the style of the works, and they are looking like a series but each spread is different. I still have many parts to add into these such as a key with the ratings of each place, the destination, how to get there and other headings. But this is a start for the series -

Week 3 - Lecture 6

In Class critique - developing spread ideas

Class today consisted of working further on our spreads with critiques and advice given from Fay and Caroline. Some points I took from todays class was after a quick critique that font size for the text can go down to 8pt, create a paragraph style for your document and work on this for the whole thing, refine your headings and paragraphs further for the layouts to work.

In class I went onto develop my spread further trying. Intending to look specifically at the layouts of the headings and work on developing my text and what I am wanting to say about my event.
Further tips in class critique were -
Have a great illustration - the text should compliment this, and be cool calm and collected. The type shouldn't defy gravity or draw attention to itself.
Work on other spread that compliments this work. Have the other pt size the same, complimenting, the spreads should all be in tandem. Work on text heavy spread that does both.
You can change the master page grid, change your grids and align your text to the new grids.
Lock your design together so you are navigated around the page.
Spreads need to flow through - fade out or change. Does it work better your pages and designs on the other side of the spread?
Lock down your heading.

Some of the headings that were investigated from this critique -

After this I went onto create and develop these into my spreads -

From here I will further develop these, incorporate some colour into the text, make some headings larger and develop the text.
Fay said to have a mock up brief development for next class with all the spreads complete for critique. I am on the right track with these and am feeling happy that my collages are starting to resolve.

Week 3 - Lecture 5 - Homework

Initial creation of brochure -

Developing my thumb nailing and bringing these thumbnails into InDesign.

Thumbnails - drawn ideas for layouts

Initial layout thumbnails mockups in InDesign -

These thumbnails are very brief mockups of bringing together the text onto the page size with my collage. The layout is working well, and the amount of text I have used for these from online - http://www.singletracks.com/bike-trails/mt-victoria.html is a example that I may take further or may use aspects of to write my one personal summery of this. Also I intend to use keys and some pull out quotes from the text.
I also need to investigate in class what the minimum font size I can use, and further fonts for the headings. I also need to develop some more textures around the text to incorporate it into the designs. This will be a good idea to bring to class tomorrow for further discussion and show how my designs and concepts have progressed.

Week 3 - Lecture 5 - Homework

Developing Collages -

I am continuing to develop my collages, with advice taken from critique. I think from these I am happy with the progress they have come and are now feeling confident enough to move forward onto thumb-nailing spreads for my brochure - Progress below: left = original - right = development. These now show the places much clearer and confidently.

Week 3 - Lecture 5

Critique -

Looking at matrix's and grids. This is starting to get me thinking about how I will lay my text spreads in my work, and how I intend for the style of my brochure to be with the collages.

We went on to a in class critique of my concepts which went well, Fay and Caroline had good feedback, some of my collages don't show cycling enough as the wheel doesn't have the spokes in it particularly in the mountain biking one.
Bring city ones more buildings  - less ‘hilly’ look.
The ones with the silhouette bikes are very Mary Poppins this doesn't work that well as everything feels very up and down, the other three are stronger as a series.
The use of the tyre is strong enough to say what the activity is and does symbolise this well enough that I can work with this further.
Think and map the flavour - tone -  intention - style - aesthetic of your brochure.

From this feedback I will go onto develop my collages and spreads for the next class on Thursday.

Week 2 - Lecture 4 - Homework

Initial Collages for each activity -

Developing Collages in Series's for each activity -
This is helping me to think about my designs and come up with ideas for what styles would and wouldn't work for my final brochure.

Series 1 -

Collage 1 - Around the Waterfront

This collage has the line representation of how you would feel during this activity, the lamp post represents the location being central to the city, the use of the textures of the concrete show the location and what you would be riding around, the use of the photography of this place to create the tyre shape shows an overview of the location and the textures in the green shape show the nature of the place. The colours here are predominantly greys which reflect the urban surroundings.

Collage 2 - Mount Vic

This collage uses the repetition of the line showing the emotions similar to the previous spread. It also has similar uses of symbolism, the pinecones represent the place and the surroundings of trees, they are turned upside down to represent the ideas that they are trees themselves. The use of the bark gives the idea you are riding over roots and the grass shows this place is very nature fulled. The colours here are green and brown which reflect the nature of Mt Vic.

Collage 3 - The Bays

This collage being similar to the others with the ideas use the same kinds of symbolism to represent this activity and place. The rocks and seagull wildlife reflects the surroundings of ocean and a place out of urban Wellington. The colours are mostly blue and light giving the natural calm idea of this ride.

As a series the three work together and would work well in a brochure spread.

Continuing with conceptual ideas - trying to think of different styles

Week 2 - Lecture 4 - Homework

Researching Brochures -

Looking at the styles of some brochure designs, looking and gaining knowledge on what I can do in my work, and take inspiration from - Analysis below

Week 2 - Lecture 4

Creating and Refining initial collages -

The lecture looked at styles and imagery relating to a topic. Specifically it looked at George Orwell's books with all different covers of the one text for different copys. I found this useful as it shows how one topic and similar ideas can be represented in many different ways.

I had a critique with Caroline which said I need to work on developing my own textures and drawing works to develop in photoshop, to bring in more textures. Our designs also NEED to have a pattern of some sorts and this would be a good idea to develop by hand.

I worked from this and went onto develop my drawings into a work on specifically the mountain biking activity from the three - These two collages are what I came up with from this critique -

And a development of the original idea -

From here I plan to go forward and use this style to create a series with each of the three activities, and further investigate design styles for next week when we start to include text with these collages.

Week 2 - Lecture 3 - Homework

Researching places - Initial Collage Development -

This week I have continued to research my sites - I went and looked at them, took images, and looked at some materials or possible symbols for each place. From this research I feel like I am now ready to move forward onto making some collages
I have looked at the images and cut out some materials for these collages -

Extended Matrix - looking at each of the activities:

My initial three collage concepts -

These are very brief ideas to take to class to show my thoughts around each place, what symbols go together etc.
